Discover finally launched contactless stickers and cards, after certifying terminals in about 100,000 merchant locations in the United States to accept its Zip application over the past three and a half years. That represents about 90% of all U.S. merchants that take contactless payment. Discover began sending passive stickers and companion cards unsolicited to selected customers–mainly tech savvy and mobile-inclined cardholders. Customers also can request the stickers. The slow rollout will continue in January.
Discover’s contactless-mobile focus is taking shape with its launch of contactless stickers and separate partnership with the Isis joint venture by U.S. mobile carriers. Isis will use Discover’s acceptance network and the Zip contactless application specifications for its planned launch of NFC-based payment. Merchants that accept Isis would also technically be able to take Zip, though the brands will remain separate.
