Trial organizers installed 19 smart posters at the Blackfriars transit hub. Passengers entered their final destinations into their phones then tapped the handsets on one of the posters, which activated the phone’s reader mode. The application was designed to receive then display transit information on the screen, including a map. The app would advise the traveler on connections he could make to reach his final destination, including, on such other modes as buses, trains and riverboats.
While a good iPhone app can do the same thing as the application in this NFC trial, the results of the pilot along with the rave reviews Transport for London received for a later O2 Wallet trial no doubt has helped sell the transit authority on NFC technology.
