Kasikornbank will distribute the NFC phones to customers, according to Gemalto, which said it will personalize the Visa payWave applications over the air. Perhaps 100 or so customers will get the phones and will be able to tap them to pay at an initial 40 retail outlets, including restaurants, entertainment venues and grocery stores. The bank said its user interface on the phones would guide customers to the outlets.
The trial appears to offer mainly PR value for the parties and perhaps a chance to get rid of unused stock of old Nokia 6212 NFC phones. Both AIS and Kasikornbank have already held separate NFC trials using a Visa payWave application, although those trials were smaller. It’s also unclear why the Visa payWave applications stored on embedded chips in the phones cannot be used at the 1,000-plus terminals in Thailand that accept payWave cards.
