Spanish bank Bankinter plans to enable a small number of employees and perhaps some of their family members to tap Samsung S5230 (Star) NFC phones to pay at about 10 restaurants and small stores at the bank’s headquarters buildings in Madrid. The bank’s mobile virtual network operator will help run the trial.
Bankinter sees itself as an innovator in the Spanish market, boasting of high percentages of its 700,000-plus customer base using mobile and Internet banking. The bank hopes to be a leader in NFC when phones arrive. But it had trouble procuring even a handful of NFC phones for the planned trial, with Spain’s No. 1 telco Telefónica having reserved all of the available Samsung Star phones for Spain.
