The four-month trial launched by mobile telco PTC and Internet bank Inteligo enables 100 customers and employees to tap their Samsung S5230 NFC phones to pay for retail purchases of up to 50 Polish zlotys (US$14.77) without entering a PIN code. A MasterCard PayPass debit application is stored on the SIM card in the phones. For transactions above 50 zlotys, trial participants will be required to enter their PINs in point-of-sale terminal keypads.
PTC and other project organizers had raced to beat rival Polkomtel to launch the first NFC trial in Poland. Polkomtel and partner Bank Zachodni WBK announced their forthcoming NFC trial in May. Though larger, the Polkomtel trial will not launch until June or July. A third NFC project, likely from Poland’s Orange-branded mobile operator PTK Centertel, is expected to launch later this year. With at least three NFC trials, and the rollout of millions of contactless cards and about 20,000 terminals by the end of 2010, Poland hopes to become one of the premier hotspots for contactless payment in Europe.
