Tokyo Japan
Scope:
Trial
This NFC trial–which used standard ISO 14443 contactless technology–was necessarily going to be small. Japan has few contactless terminals that accept anything other than Sony’s proprietary FeliCa technology.
NFC Times Take:
Softbank, Japan’s third largest mobile operator, along with No. 2 KDDI, has been keener to move to NFC than dominant telco NTT DoCoMo. NFC could open up Japan to a greater variety of handsets for contactless services and also break the stranglehold Sony and DoCoMo have on the contactless wallet phone technology rolled out in Japan starting in 2004.
* Trusted Service Manager: Defined loosely to include companies or other organizations securely distributing, provisioning and managing applications, generally over the air, on secure elements in NFC mobile phones; or licensing their platforms for this purpose.
N/A: Not available or not applicable.
