KDDI mainly held the small week-long trial as a test of putting an international credit card application, MasterCard PayPass, on a SIM card using standard contactless technology. The trial was apparently held among employees of the companies, who could tap their specially equipped NFC phones to pay for purchases. The phones, from Japanese electronics company Hitachi, reportedly supported the PayPass application on the SIM using an early version of the single-wire protocol standard. KDDI also tested mobile couponing in the trial.
KDDI, the second largest mobile operator in Japan behind NTT DoCoMo, is keen to move to NFC from more proprietary contactless-wallet phones using technology from Sony Corp. and promoted by DoCoMo. The No. 3 mobile telco Softbank Mobile is also eager to move to NFC and held an NFC trial in 2008 with the same application, issuer and card vendor as in the KDDI trial.
