The employee trial by Credito Valtellinese is the first to put a contactless version of V Pay, Visa Europe’s debit application, on an NFC phone. The same bank launched the first V Pay contactless cards in 2008 under its “Tellcard” program and has issued 9,000 cards to date, according to a bank source. About 200 merchants in the northern Italian province of Sondrio accept the cards and application on the phone.
Despite a pool of actual contactless cardholders, the bank and Visa Europe chose to keep the pilot internal, among bank employees. Visa Europe would like to make more inroads among cash-toting Italians with contactless and other card payment, but it’s having most luck in Europe in the UK, Turkey and Poland with its payWave contactless application.
