Indonesia’s largest mobile operator, Telkomsel, plans to put its store-value payment application onto SIM cards using Chinese RF-SIM technology. Users would be able to tap to pay at up to 500 convenience stores during the three- to six-month trial.
NFC Times Take:
Telkomsel, the country’s dominant mobile operator, already offers a network-based payment service at the point of sale. It may be trying to follow in the footsteps of China’s huge mobile telco China Mobile, which is rolling out its own payment scheme using contactless SIMs. For the trial, Telkomsel plans to use the same RF-SIM technology as China Mobile.
* Trusted Service Manager: Defined loosely to include companies or other organizations securely distributing, provisioning and managing applications, generally over the air, on secure elements in NFC mobile phones; or licensing their platforms for this purpose.
