The trial, conducted with the CROUS student organization of the eastern French city of Besançon, reportedly allowed students to recharge their prepaid Moneo electronic purse over the air and view transactions on the screen. They could then pay at university merchants and other locations, as well as view their transaction history.
Like other closed-loop electronic purses in Europe, France’s Moneo has been a flop in the form of a contact smart card. NFC probably won’t save it, but the backer of this trial, Crédit Agricole, has experimented with peer-to-peer payments using NFC phones. This trial no doubt gave it some experience with student m-payment habits.
