Perhaps the world’s first multiapplication NFC trial, this pilot enabled users to tap their phones to make both low and higher-value payments at stores, enter parking garages and get data by tapping RFID tags at some stores and also on touch-points in the city center to download tourist information.
Early multiapplication NFC trial put France Telecom-Orange into the driver’s seat in France pushing NFC to market. The telco planned to follow this and a separate trial with Paris transport operator RATP with a “precommercial launch,” in the Southwestern city of Bordeaux in early 2008. But technical problems and the loss of its main transit partner, Veolia Transport, which failed to have its franchise to serve the city renewed, caused Orange to scrub the project. The telco has since abandoned its go-it-alone approach.
