Pass and Fly pilot, scheduled to run six months, enabled passengers to tap their NFC phones or phones-clad stickers on kiosks to download digital boarding passes. Passengers had to have first check-in over the PC Internet or the mobile network before coming to the airport. Apps were reportedly preloaded. Boarding passes complied with International Air Transport Association (IATA) format. The app also credits points for the airport’s frequent flyer loyalty program. They tap the phone again at the security checkpoint and the terminal displays the boarding pass electronically for security screeners. At the gate, participants tap a third time and the terminal spits out a coupon with a seat assignment.
Giant Europe-based air reservation system operator Amadeus is interested in further developing the mobile boarding-pass application using NFC phones. Until NFC phones are in abundant supply, Amadeus is also interested in testing stickers that incorporate NFC chips and communicate with phones via a Bluetooth connection.
