One of the largest rollouts of passive contactless stickers to date, the children’s clothing retailer, Tape a’ l’Oeil, uses stickers to identify customers. Customers tap the stickers, which can be attached to the back of their mobile phones, at the point of sale, which transmits the ID number to the system. The program also reportedly enables customers to access their accounts on their home computers by tapping them on USB readers.
The passive stickers offer the same functionality as contactless cards and can’t communicate with the baseband of the mobile phone. But it does offer a novel way for customers to identify themselves for the store loyalty program. And while there is a lot of talk about potential rollouts of open-loop payment applications in passive stickers, especially in the U.S., the Adelya loyalty program with Tap a’ l’Oeil is an example of the technology in action in Europe.
