Reportedly the first public trial downloading an application to an NFC phone over the air. Nokia and the merchant acquiring arm of Chinese banking card organization UnionPay organized the trial, enabling users to download the loyalty application and then tap to redeem loyalty points for purchases. Those points, however, were reportedly stored on a server, not on the phone, so redemption required the system to go online to complete the transaction.
The modest trial was nonetheless a first for OTA downloads. NFC hype was ramping up at the time and many companies would later set up trusted service management units to handle demand for secure application downloads they were sure would come. Those TSMs still have little to do.
* Trusted Service Manager: Defined loosely to include companies or other organizations securely distributing, provisioning and managing applications, generally over the air, on secure elements in NFC mobile phones; or licensing their platforms for this purpose.
