Users will be able tap standard NFC phones at merchant terminals in the Expo 2010 park and elsewhere in Shanghai for low-value payments using a contactless prepaid application complying with People’s Bank of China specifications. The apps will be stored on SIM cards in NFC phones that support the single-wire protocol, said a source.
While it’s still unclear how many subscribers will get phones, the project by China’s No. 2 telco, Unicom, and monopoly domestic payment processor, UnionPay, is a shot across the bow of China Mobile and the latter’s mobile-payment scheme. China Mobile is planning to showcase its 2.4-GHz RF-SIM technology for its payment service, along with event and transit ticketing at the Expo. The telco began issuing RF-SIMs in November.
