The trial enabled users to tap their Nokia 3220 phones to pay fares on buses and ferries, along with purchases at stores, restaurants, theaters and other venues that also accept the city’s e-tong transit card. Users also could view their last nine transactions on their handset screens and connect to WAP, wireless Internet.
Xiamen was the site of China’s first NFC trial. Nokia’s 6131 NFC phone, the successor to the Nokia 3220 used in this trial, went on sale to the general public in the summer of 2007 in Xiamen. Guangzhou and Beijing phone shops also got the phones. The phones came preloaded with those cities’ transit e-purses, which users could also tap for purchases at some retail locations in addition to paying fares. But sightings of the phones in use at either stores or transit terminals were rare. China Mobile’s branch in Xiamen later tested m-payment using SIM cards with a contactless interface and an antenna attached to the card.
