The trial enabled cardholders of the banks to tap their Nokia phones to pay at shops in Shanghai.
NFC Times Take:
The trial was at least the second for the Chinese domestic card network, China UnionPay, following a pilot in 2006, which was perhaps the first to test over-the-air downloads of applications to NFC phones. The application in the earlier trial enabled users to tap to redeem loyalty points for purchases. The 2008 trial extended functionality to multiple payment issuers, reportedly using a UnionPay contactless application.
