Very small internal trial was the first to test the over-the-air download and personalization of a transit application complying with the international Calypso specification. Once activating the service, users were able to buy tickets or renew transit passes over the mobile network. They could then tap their handsets on contactless readers to pay fares with Paris Métro operator RATP.
The lab test was designed to iron out any problems with downloading transit applications and tickets over the air. Bouygues held earlier public transit-ticketing trials and has been involved with other mobile operators in the large NFC payment trial in Strasbourg and Caen. The telco considers it important to be able to download apps over the air to SIMs and believes transit ticketing will drive NFC rollouts in France because the infrastructure of contactless readers is already in place in many cities.
