Taiwan’s Fair Trade Commission has approved a joint venture among Taiwan’s five mobile operators and its major contactless payments service provider, EasyCard Corp., to build an NFC payments platform, but with conditions.
The decision, announced today, clears the way for the joint venture to hire a trusted service manager and mobile-wallet software provider and build other parts of its common mobile-payments platform.
It appears unlikely that any of the partners will be able to launch NFC services on the platform this year, but individual telcos are expected to at least have precommercial launches or more pilots of NFC in 2013.
