NFC TIMES Exclusive Insight – Stockholm Public Transport, or SL, the city-owned company that oversees major public transport in the city, is the latest agency in Europe to launch open-loop fare collection, offering multimodal rides with a tap of a contactless EMV bank card or NFC device.
SL launched the service this month on buses, metro, commuter rail, trams and ferries, enabling customers to pay with contactless EMV credit and debit cards branded Visa, Mastercard or American Express; and also with such NFC payments services as Apple Pay, Google Pay and Samsung Pay and Sweden-based wearables payments platform Fidesmo Pay. The transit agency is offering only full adult single ticket fares with contactless payments, with no discounts or fare capping for now.
Stockholm follows such large transit agencies in Europe as London, Moscow, Milan, Madrid, Rome, Brussels and Kiev, along with a number of smaller cities, in launching open-loop contactless fare payments. Agencies in other cities have announced moves to enable open loop and are in the process of implementing rollouts, such as Amsterdam, Helsinki and Bonn.
