NFC TIMES Exclusive Insight – Sony has introduced its NFC-enabled smart watch strap, Wena, to the UK and Ireland, which will allow users to turn their analog watches into hybrid smartwatches and tap the straps to pay with tokenized EMV-compliant cards loaded into the devices from wallet apps.
Sony first launched the high-priced smart strap in 2016 in Japan supporting FeliCa-based e-money services. With the expansion to Europe, Wena will initially support EMV cards from two issuers–a prepaid card from Germany-based Wirecard in the UK and Ireland and credit and debit cards from KBC Bank Ireland. All the cards at launch will be Mastercard-branded.
The Bluetooth-enabled straps communicate with smartphone wallets, which is believed to enable users to load and manage the payments applications onto an NFC secure element in the straps. The Bluetooth connection also enables users to receive notifications from other smartphone apps, as well as fitness tracking results. This information is displayed on a tiny OLED screen on the strap.
