NFC Times Exclusive Insight – Singapore's Land Transport Authority says it will hold a pilot later this year enabling customers to tap to pay for rides with contactless EMV credit and debit cards.
If it decides to later roll out open-loop fare collection, it would follow such major transit agencies as Transport for London and the Chicago Transit Authority, which have introduced fare collection from contactless bank cards, as well as agencies in New York, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C., which plan to do so.
But there is one difference. These transit authorities in Europe and North America do not have their own fare-collection scheme that they are also promoting as a closed-loop e-purse for retail purchases.
