NFC Times Exclusive – Mohamed Awad, who formerly headed Broadcom’s NFC business, has returned to oversee the program, among other duties, as Broadcom looks to reinvigorate a program that is lagging behind competitors in terms of high-profile design wins.
Broadcom, which failed to hold onto the NFC supply contract for Samsung Electronics’ flagship Galaxy S5 rolled out last spring or to win the device maker’s high-end Galaxy Note 4 released this fall, has had to content itself with only a limited number of mainly second-tier phones from Samsung and a few other OEMs for its latest BCM20795 NFC chip.
“This year has been bad for Broadcom in terms of NFC,” said one analyst.
