NFC TIMES Exclusive Insight – Japan, the first market globally to adopt contactless-mobile payments, in 2004, with a technology similar to NFC, will see its two largest convenience store chains introduce their own mobile payments services this year–both using bar codes or QR codes instead of NFC.
Chains 7-Eleven and FamilyMart are only the latest payments players in Japan to embrace mobile payments using non-NFC-based technology, as they follow the lead of huge digital-payments services Alipay and WeChat Pay in China.
7-Eleven and FamilyMart, the largest and second-largest convenience store chains globally and also No. 1 and No. 2, respectively, in Japan, reportedly plan to launch the payments services this summer in their Japanese outlets.
