If all goes according to plan, Sydney, Australia, should finally have a contactless transit-ticketing system in place by the end of 2012, following years of delays.
Government officials, who compared the planned electronic-ticketing system to London’s Oyster card, have awarded a contract to a consortium led by U.S.-based Cubic Transportation Systems, which they hope will finally get the troubled project back on track.
Cubic today announced it had signed a contract worth US$370 million (A$398 million) that could increase to more than US$600 million through 2024. Government officials had announced last month that the Cubic-led Pearl Consortium would get the contract, beating out Germany-based Scheidt and Bachmann and a group that included Octopus Solutions and Thales Australia.
