LG Electronics has signed a global licensing deal for NFC technology patents from Inside Secure, an initial win for Inside and its strategy to try to cash in on its NFC IP.
It follows lawsuits filed last December in the U.S. and Germany by Inside’s patent firm, France Brevets, against LG, along with handset maker HTC. NXP Semiconductors, which is supplying NFC chips to both device makers, filed its own suit in March, seeking to have another U.S. district judge declare the Inside patents invalid as they relate to any alleged infringement by NXP.
The NXP suit is ongoing. But France Brevets and its U.S. subsidiary, NFC Technology LLC, agreed to drop its suits against LG following LG’s decision to license the NFC patent portfolio from France Brevets, which mainly includes IP from Inside, but also counts NFC patents from telco Orange and a third, unnamed party.
