Google has unveiled its Galaxy Nexus, its much-anticipated follow-up to the Nexus S, which the Web giant is touting as supporting NFC-based content-sharing functionality called "Android Beam." The feature is part of the latest version of Google’s Android operating system, Ice Cream Sandwich.
While the content-sharing functionality is not new, Google has tweaked the user interface in Ice Cream Sandwich, also known as Android 4.0.
Google says Android Beam enables users to tap their phones together to quickly share contacts, apps, maps, YouTube videos and other Web sites. The URLs or other links are exchanged via the NFC interface between the two phones, and the content gets sent over the network. The first model supporting Ice Cream Sandwich and Android Beam is the Samsung-made Galaxy Nexus, due to hit the market next month.
